Star Theory

The term Star refers to the semi-mythical set of meanings that are constructed around a music performers

Values of Stardom

-Youth
-Rebellion
-Sexy
-Anti-authoritarian
-Originality
-creative/talented
- aggression
-conspicuous consumption of sex, drugs and material goods.
-Success against the odds

Richard Dyer - Revise for section A

Stars have some key features in common

-The star is an image, not  real person that is constructed out of range of materials (magazines, TV, Films)

-Stars are commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings

The star image is incoherent that is incomplete and 'open

Paradox 1 -

The star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer

Paradox 2-

The star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer.

The audiences always seem to try and complete the image which is achieved by continued consumption of star through his or her products

Are we creating a star or a singer/performer?

-post modernism

pastiche, parody, and remix culture

Are women filmed differently in music videos compared to men?

Women are more objectified than men in music videos, including more tracking shots of their figure being used.

The Gaze Theory

What is the Gaze? - How an audience views the artist intended.

The Male Gaze theory- (1975)

- Representation of women in a sexual fantasy in the form of a straight male view.
- sopophilia - the pleasure of looking at other peoples body parts
-objectification of female characters
-patriarchal society
- Active male and passive female
-men - controlling subjects
-women as an image
-Men do the looking and Women get looked at
-Needs of the male ego.

One page pitch

One Page pitch.
Plot
The plot of my music video will follow a teenage girl as she walks into a computer suite at her school to study on the computer. However, as she tries to get her computer to work, the screen glitches and freezes a few times. Knowingly getting frustrated with the computer, a computer-glitch ghost appears on the screen and sings to the girl sitting at the computer. Various TV clips will be shown in a glitchy manner as if somebody is surfing through channels quickly. A lot of this will be shown in the reflection of the girl's eyes.
Finally, the glitch appears to come out of the computer and the girl, obviously terrified, tries to run away from the glitch monster, sprinting from the computer room and down the school corridors as she glitch proceeds to chase her.
She runs around the school grounds until she locks herself in a storage cupboard. She stands by the door, exhausted. The glitch stands by the door and sings the song to the door the girl is hidden behind.
It soon becomes apparent as the girl hides in the cupboard that she is becoming a computer glitch herself and eventually accepts the fact she has become the same as the glitch monster. She opens the door to the glitch and they stand opposite each other.
The song includes a lot of instrumental parts that consist of an electronic/dub step nature. These will feature the parts of the music video where the glitch is chasing the girl. As this happens, i intend to use a range of special effects to make the glitch monster seem more intimidating.
Appeal
My music video is targeted at a younger audience, typically young adults and teenagers since the main character is also a teenager which makes the music seem relate to the audience. I feel with technology becoming more and more a part of everyday life, my music video creates a type of horror situation that if we dig too deep into technology, we'll lose touch on being ourselves. Because of this, it could appeal to people who enjoy the horror genre and possibly technical fanatics.
Location.
The location of the music video will mostly take place on school grounds. Particularly in a computer lab and then the corridors of the school. It can be added that the school grounds outside might be a good idea to film and also in a storage cupboard.
Characters
There are only two characters in the music video, that being the school girl and the glitch.

Ideas on what will make a good music video:

  • A narrative approach - a strong lyrical content
  • Listen to song without the music video - No bias opinion
  • Try not to use popular songs
  • Play to strengths on what you can and can't do ( Don't do summer song when it's winter )
  • You need to think about how lip syncing matches up to the voice of the singer

Media language

Media Language - What is it?

Media language refers to the technical elements media producers use to communicate meaning to the audience.

Different type of album covers

One of the tasks we were given was that we needed to explore different kinds of album covers. From this, me and my friends got creative and decided to pose in front of a wall to replicate the different genres. After taking the photos, we put them into Photoshop and changed the colour correction on various ones to give them a different atmosphere.

Music Videos and Genre

The pop cover displays the artist and a white, handwritten font

The indie record looks as if it's quite eccentric. The band members are not displayed and normally have artwork on them.

the house record is simplistic and has drawn, distorted faces.

Is Genre a problem?

It could mean that artists have to behave and look the same way and means that changing their identity risks loosing their audience.

It can be said either the audience or the music industry controls what makes a genre and how it starts.

The Trapstep genre.

Some Trapstep seems to take original songs and remix them, it is a mixture of both trap music and Dubstep.

Originally,Trap music was a sub-genre from the 1990's in the USA. Typically, Trap is bleak and gritty and varies from different artists. Typical lyrics in Trap music include poverty, violence and living in urban areas.

Trap music employs a heavy use of multi-layered hard-lined and melodicsynthesizers; crisp, grimy, and rhythmic snares; deep 808 kick drums; double-time, triple-time and similarly divided hi-hats; and a cinematic and symphonic utilization of string, brass, woodwind, and keyboard instruments creating an overall dark, harsh, grim, and bleak atmosphere for the listener. The tempo of a typical trap beat is around 140 BPM

'Trap' refers to the place drug dealers give away their drugs, it is commonly used now as before, rappers referred to the places as the 'trap'

5 music videos i enjoy

I found this music video really enjoyable simply for the fact that it is animated entirely apart from when the rapper appears out of the ground and sings. For the rest of the song, the music video features the main singer, cartoon character "2D" singing in a desert with an army hat on to a crowd of children. In the tank, characters Murdoc, Noodle and Russel drive through the desert in search for 2D and the rest of the children in order to rescue them. Damon Albarn, the writer of the song, tells us that the song is based on children in war zones, having to protect themselves against guns and other weapons of war, this is shown as the children sing "I need a gun, to keep myself from harm"

What i enjoyed about this music video is that the whole world seems to be made out of candy. It's creative, sweet and has a lot of colour. The whole video seems to take place inside a giant board game that is played by Snoop Dog. The video contains sweet desserts come to life including alive gummy bears and ginger bread men. From what I can tell, wide shots are mostly used here to possibly emphasise the strange scenery.

What I particularly like with "Wall of glass" was the rotating shot of the corridor going round and round with the different colours flashing around in kind of  orange/yellow haze with the lights flickering as this goes on. A reverse zoom shot is slowly going towards a door as the corridor rotates all before SFX are used to make the screen look like it has shattered, all before Liam is revealed standing in the corridor, a low angled shot looking up to him with him crouching down slightly to peer into the camera. The part of  the video where he talks into a multiple mirrors is also interesting as he is shown from different angles lip singing and this looks really effective in relation to the blue light being shone.
What I liked about this video was the lyrics appearing on one of the toys in time with the song. It also features a lot of closeups of the singer's face as he lip sings while playing on his keyboard. He appears to be inside a child's bedroom which presents the song as being quite playful, innocent and lively. The singer wears average clothes, that being a t-shirt and jeans which makes him look a lot more approachable to the audience watching.
I liked this video for the fact that it is unique and quite strange to watch. The mise-en-scene of the costume is minimal with them wearing nude coloured underwear and are inside a white room with a massive cage. The two people in the cage, A man and a girl proceed to dance strangely and in different positions. The seem to act quite feral as the dance in the cage, communicating with each other quite oddly and moving unhumanly.

Textual analysis of a music video before i was born

The video begins with a rather faded background with two hands switching on and off a light bulb with quite a cold, white light. This could temporal link to the music as the bulb lights up each time the music has a beat. It's a simple rhythm at the start which links to the simplistic scene that lacks colour and features a few moths flying around the bulb.

The next few shots shown after that are extreme close ups of rapidly blinking eyes of different people to symbolise the music building up slightly more. The colour of the scene is a lot brighter with yellows and primary colours of the eyes and clothing standing out. As the eyes blink rapidly, women in bikinis swim around on a pool, smiling. The sound and mise-en-scene on this is nicely linked through Goodwin's theories of the nice up beat tune and the bright scenery of women sunbathing and having fun on a summery day.

The lead singer of the band, Damon, is then standing in a tilted, close up shot with the same enhanced colour as before. He looks directly in the camera and winks while the green screen behind him displays different pub signs, architecture and neon signs. This presents the common culture of what people tend to do and see on holiday. As Damon sings "Following the heard." The green screen behind him shows many people queuing up to get onto an elevator. This links to Goodwin's theories as it shows the lyrics of the song and the footage of the music video closely related.

The mise-en-secne of the video displays the band members in long, baggy sports jackets and jeans with hair quite messy. As the music video goes along, different people begin to wear plain white T-shirts with words of the lyrics printed onto them in black lettering. this showing the relation of the song to the video.

From the mise-en-scene, it is clear that the music video is representing the band as youthful and rebellious.

The editing of the video flickers between scenes of people partying in a nightclub to men and women drinking, having fun by the pool and going down waterslides. All this happens in moments as the band stands and plays in front of the screen and images moving around. All this symbolises the fun atmosphere the music producers want you to feel.

A lot of arch shots are used particularly around Damon and the rest of the band as they play. The band members jump around with their guitars and dance in time with the beat.

A new beginning

AS has finished but A2 starts suddenly. It's the scary part of the year where you don't know how well or badly you've done. Despite this, planning for music videos begin and i'm looking forward to understanding the music industry and how footage can be matched to the ryhmnic beat of a song
