CD covers and booklets still sell due to people liking tangibility and something to look at and hold.
Music videos have had a change of purpose over the years. They used to be recorded footage of the artist singing but then moved on as directed videos linked to the song. Early music videos tended to be made for recorded live performances of artists that couldn't go on tour in their country in order to promote the artist a lot more.
In the 1970's videos had more artistic value than just a performance which was mainly used to cultivate the star.
1980/90s - The invention of MTV, making music videos a necessity for artists for distribution.
Main tech - Hard disk editing, digital, global TV satellite stations.
2000s - further experimentation , the rise of auteur directors, videos became just as artistic as the music.
Youtube - The music video never disappears from the public and can be as long as the artist wants.
Recently, music videos have changed drastically with one example of being the new Gorillaz album with how they've used a 360 degree camera to film their music video :
