Question 2
Q2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The first ideas I had of Ocean Bacon.
Ocean Bacon, at first to me, was a product of my mind creating the wackiest and unique band possible. I wanted to create something ultra-unique to the music industry that was like no other band I had heard of before. It was my opportunity to really create something unoriginal and try to show off my creativity.
Although I wanted a unique band, I stole a lot of concepts from other bands, mostly the virtual band of Gorillaz. I am such a big fan of them, the first name of the band was in fact "Monkeyz" because of how much I adored them.
Only when I realised that my band would just be a copy of a real-life band, I decided to change their name to 'Ocean Bacon' Although seeming completely out of the blue, is in fact an intertextual reference to Gorillaz also.
It may be hard to notice but written on the wall in the Gorillaz music video 'Doyathing' are the words 'Ocean Bacon'. In the Gorillaz Bio, 'Ocean Bacon' is related to the band member 'Noodle' who was able to recover from her amnesia when the code word 'Ocean Bacon' was said to her >> According to Damon Albarn and the Gorillaz Wiki
From the meaning meant to the Gorillaz band member, I decided to call 'Ocean Bacon' my band, particularly because I wanted the band to be quite influencial to their audience in 'awakening' them to the issues of the Earth, just like how it awoke Noodle from her Amnesia.
My band consists of three members, Joshua Attwell (Death the Kid), Amy Calladine ( Akuji) And Sarah Wakefield (Maka)
These nicknames given to the band are somewhat not significant apart from Joshua's nickname who represents death in the entirety of the album including 'Kids with Guns' This is also why he is represented as a villain and a skeleton.
With the Album of 'Echo' I wanted the values of the band to fit in nicely with the CD package and website, so their image of mysteriousness was constant throughout their image.
My album cover seems complicated in design but is very simplistic with the image of technology in the background and a person falling (With a TV as a head). I enjoyed creating the glitch effect In photoshop as it added to the distortedness I aimed for the band to come across by to their audience. To add to their effect of conspiracy style content of music, the TV head was used to represent how the newest generation is too involved with technology and that their head is so far into their computer screens that they barely see what's going on in the world around them, this is what Ocean Bacon aims to change.
Also, like Gorillaz, Ocean Bacon follows similar concepts of art and illustration, originally, I wanted to partly animate my music video as their music videos inspired me, but through learning that a great deal of time and care going into animating, I decided it was easier to film my music video with real life imagery, however, that did not stop me from decorating the album CD booklet in illustrations and distorted illustrations relating to the album cover and music video.
I understand if a company would want to distribute my band it would have to be an independent company as it is common for my band to touch upon sensitive subjects in their songs, this in turn would present Ocean Bacon with a niche audience.

Representation of the Antagonist
Representation is the construct of media companies
portraying certain individuals, characters, genders or backgrounds. In my A2
media Music video, I’ve portrayed the main antagonist as being a teenaged boy
with his hood up. This is because in typical media, teenaged Boys are
represented to be rebellious and a threat to society while also being dangerous
to the rest of the public. The meaning behind having his hood up gives seismic
codes of teenagers hiding their identity through committing crimes and joining
gangs which is also a threat to the public. This could link to Levi Strauss’ theory
of binary oppositions between the young and old generation. Theoretically, an
older generation is more likely to believe in badly behaved teenagers but from a
younger generation’s perspective, the representation and physical appearance
may look average and normal which could possibly emphasise the fact that the teenaged
protagonist is more naïve than what an older protagonist might be due to how
the antagonist looks.

CD covers and booklets still sell due to people liking tangibility and something to look at and hold.
Music videos have had a change of purpose over the years. They used to be recorded footage of the artist singing but then moved on as directed videos linked to the song. Early music videos tended to be made for recorded live performances of artists that couldn't go on tour in their country in order to promote the artist a lot more.
In the 1970's videos had more artistic value than just a performance which was mainly used to cultivate the star.
1980/90s - The invention of MTV, making music videos a necessity for artists for distribution.
Main tech - Hard disk editing, digital, global TV satellite stations.
2000s - further experimentation , the rise of auteur directors, videos became just as artistic as the music.
Youtube - The music video never disappears from the public and can be as long as the artist wants.
Recently, music videos have changed drastically with one example of being the new Gorillaz album with how they've used a 360 degree camera to film their music video :

everyone, everywhere to share information, access opportunities and collaborate
across geographical and cultural boundaries.”
“Governments are increasingly watching our every move online
and are passing extreme laws. – It creates a chilling effect on free speech.”
